Girl Scout Field Trip Ideas
(Plano & D/FW-area)
Site last updated 5/11/01

I'm currently a Brownie leader in Plano and have arranged many local field trips for a large Plano family organization for three years. Much of the information below comes from personal experiences setting up 1-2 field trips a month for three years (and attending more than that), some of it is taken from the literature and web sites of the destinations listed and more recently, from our local GS Council's T.I.P.S book. I can't guarantee every contact phone number will stay correct on this page but I'll update any revised information as I become aware of it. This isn't a comprehensive list of every tourist attraction in the D/FW metroplex... it's more of a list of local places to visit that compliment various aspects of the Girl Scout program. Feel free to contact me with any problems, questions, or updated information. Return to our Girl Scout Resources Page

Post Office Tour -
Have Scouts take a pre-stamped and pre-addressed postcard (20 cents each) and mail it while you're there. It will arrive back at their homes in a couple of days and what kid doesn't like to get mail even if they sent it to themselves?! This is neat to see in your mailbox after learning how the process of sorting and delivering mail works. (or they can send it to mom, grandma, a pen pal, secret pal, whatever) For this trip you should really go in the A.M. It's better because you can actually see your own postal worker sorting your mail. The delivery workers leave to do their mail routes in mid-to-late morning so they won't be around to see late in the day & many of the ones we saw would chat with the kids and answer any questions. Morning visits may work best during the summer (maybe 1-2 days right after school ends & before some families leave for vacations), spring or fall breaks, or any 'non-traditional' school holidays that aren't on national holidays when P.O. would be closed. We went around 9-10 a.m. This is NOT the post office facility with the cool high-speed sorting machines but you can call your local Post Office to see if a tour of that particular place is available. (Is that in Carrollton?) Both facilities offer something different... one has the 'wow!' sorting machines and one has your local postal worker actually putting the mail you're going to get that day into the one little slot that's just for your home address. Some kids thought it was cool seeing their own postal workers getting ready for delivery! (They asked some kids their zip code & street name & led us over to their postal worker who always had a smile for the kids & sometimes even recognized them from their routes)
